Ellen has been changing lives of many. She has changed lives of millions without knowing it and asks for nothing in return. She tells stories of those that have a meaning and are worth telling. She inspires and gives you that big push that you need to continue through life when you think that life is falling apart.
On one of Ellen’s shows, a video was played that began talking about the hardships a couple faced at the beginning of their marriage, which then they talk about how they overcame this struggle. Ivy and I started watching your show; you helped us get through treatment by bringing smiles to our faces when we thought smiling was impossible… Ellen keep doing what you do (A Big Surprise for a Cancer Survivor”). This is just one of many stories of how she changed lives.
In May of 2012, a woman named Stephanie Decker came onto the show and told Ellen about losing both legs through a storm trying to protect her children. Stephanie Decker told Ellen how she used her own body to protect her children from the tornado, leading her to lose both her legs. In May, she promised she would be back even though doctors told her that it would take at least a year to be able to walk but she beat the odds. Through the months while recovering and going through therapy, she setup The Stephanie Foundation. The Stephanie Decker Foundation helps children with prosthetics that allows children to be children and the other part is technology… (Tornado Survivor Stephanie Decker Walks on Stage”). Thanks to Ellen, the foundation has received funding to continue to strive towards its goal.

Ellen DeGeneres

Ellen DeGeneres is an animal rights activist, comedian, and talk show host. As successful as she is, DeGeneres did not go through the same education and path that most people would think lead to success. At first, she dreamed of being a Veterinarian but she claimed she was "not book smart” (biography, pars. 2) and she started to work. Then one day, at a public speaking event, she found her way through the uncomfortable situation through comedy. After that day, DeGeneres started to perform and eventually became the host of a talk show. She came out as gay in 1997 and has become a very important and loyal LGBT rights activist. Her show went through some difficulties when she announced that she was gay but she became the first lead in sitcom history to announce her homosexuality on the air. “When activist group One Million Moms raised a public outcry over JC Penney's decision to use openly gay DeGeneres as its spokesperson the company rallied behind her--and rightly so.” (Forbes, pars. 1) Even though she lost show sponsors and people withdrew advertisements, it did not stop her from striving to succeed. Not only is DeGeneres a homosexual in a very judgmental and close-minded society, she is also a woman. Men have always been viewed superior to women, but DeGeneres is and inspiration for many women trying to prove this mind set wrong. Ellen DeGeneres has been named the #47 most powerful woman in the world and the #34 most powerful celebrity in the world according to Forbes. She shows us that we do not have to be confined to the societies stereotypes and expectations in order to succeed.

As a lesbian, Ellen DeGeneres is a role model to the LGBT community as well as to average Americans who admire what she has accomplished and what she stands for. By simply being herself and letting the world know who she is, Ellen DeGeneres is an inspiration to others.
After DeGeneres “came out” on The Oprah Winfrey Show and in Time in April 1997, her leading role on a sitcom “came out” as well. This paved the way for many other LGBT-themed shows. These programs promoted the acceptance and understanding of the LGBT community.
DeGeneres still continues to support the LGBT movement and reach out to others. In her video, “An Important Message,” which concerns the recent suicides of gay teenagers, DeGeneres states, “I want anyone out there who feels different and alone to know that I know how you feel. And there is help out there and you can find support in your community… Things will get easier, peoples minds will change, and you should be alive to see it.” (DeGeneres)
Though DeGeneres is in the community raising awareness of the discrimination that occurs, she herself is still discriminated against. When JC Penney decided to use DeGeneres as its spokesperson, the organization One Million Moms protested that JC Penney was trying to gain a new target market and would lose its customers with traditional values. However, Ellen DeGeneres stayed strong and replied to the group on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, saying that her values were honesty, equality, kindness, compassion, treating people the way you'd want to be treated and helping those in need. (DeGeneres)
Ellen DeGeneres is an amazing role model who is steady even in the face of adversities and discrimination. So many people look towards her for guidance and help.
